Music assignment 1
Johnny Cash
I’ve recently watched ‘Walk the Line’ and loved it, so Johhny Cash’s now one of my favorite musicians of those old times next to Elvis Presley. This American singing legend is known to his fans as ‘The Man in Black’. Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932 in Arkansas, moving to Dyess when he was three. By the time he was 12, he had begun writing his own songs. With the outbreak of the Korean War, he enlisted in the Air Force. While he was in the Air Force, Cash bought his first guitar and taught himself to play. He began writing songs in earnest, including "Folsom Prison Blues." Cash left the Air Force in 1954, married a Texas woman named Vivian Leberto, and moved to Memphis.
Jonny Cash finally landed an audition with Sun Records and its founder, Sam Phillips, in 1955. Initially, Cash presented himself as a gospel singer, but Phillips turned him down, telling him to come back with something that could sell. Cash sang him one of the songs he wrote in the air force, finally impressing Phillips.
Cash’s career coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and his rebellious attitude and simple, direct musical attack shared a lot of similarities with rock. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world weariness of country. And he was one of country music's biggest stars of the '50s and '60s, scoring well over 100 hit singles.
One of my favorite songs of Johnny Cash is called ‘The Ring of Fire’. It was written by June Carter (who would later become his wife) and Merle Kilgore.
THE RING OF FIRE
Artist: Johnny Cash
Words by June Carter and Merle Kilgore
Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild DesireI Fell Into A Ring Of Fire
CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of FireT
he Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild
CHORUS
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher
And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down

And It Burns, Burns, Burns

Walter Brennan
Walter Brennan, actor and country musician, was born in Swampscott, MA, on July 25, 1894. His recording career was at its most prolific during the early '60s. A duet with Billy Vaughn, "Dutchman's Gold," was his first chart hit. Three more -- "Old Rivers," "Houdini," and "Mama Sang Me a Song" -- registered two years later. He passed away in 1974, due to emphysema, on the 21st of September. To this day, the request for his song “Old Rivers” is still very high on radio stations.

Vicky,
I am glad that you did a review on your blog about Johnny Cash. The acress playing his wife, received an Oscar for her portrayal. Both Rivers and her, did their own singing. Here are the actors and actresses:
Joaquin Phoenix .... Johnny Cash
Reese Witherspoon .... June Carter
Ginnifer Goodwin .... Vivian
Robert Patrick .... Ray Cash
Dallas Roberts .... Sam Phillips
Dan John Miller .... Luther Perkins
Larry Bagby .... Marshall Grant
Shelby Lynne .... Carrie Cash
Tyler Hilton .... Elvis Presley
Waylon Payne .... Jerry Lee Lewis (as Waylon Malloy Payne)
Shooter Jennings .... Waylon Jennings
Sandra Ellis Lafferty .... Maybelle Carter
Dan Beene .... Ezra Carter
Clay Steakley .... W.S. 'Fluke' Holland
Johnathan Rice .... Roy Orbison
Notice that Waylon Jennings is played by his son, Shooter. He sounds and sings like Waylon and will be a top Country artist. Darrin, my son, is a big Shooter fan. Johnny Cash has a son, who tried to make it in the business. Nope. Merle Haggard has a son, who tried to make it in the business. Nope.
It is really hard to become a star Country singer. It is almost impossible. I will post something on here about the KING of Country Music and that was Hank Williams. I will spend a blog on it, because it will boggle your mind with what has happened after his death.
I can remember listening to Johnny sing, "I Walk The Line," when I was in junior high. We listened to a station in Wichita named, "KFDI." I bought his album "Folsom Prison," and on that Album there is a song called, "Dirty Ol' Egg Suckin' Dog." I have been singing it for four plus decades. It is a fun song, and historically true.
Johnny Cash wrote a lot of songs about true happening, and real people. He had one whole album on American Indians. Cash paved the way for other musicians to follow in. Most of the stars have been on his tours, to "learn the ropes." We call it in the US, "learning through the school of HARD KNOCKS."
Cash has one daughter who really is a successful musician. See if you can find out what her name is. One of Mr. C's buddies at junior college, drove to Muskogee to be recorded live, for the song, "The Okie From Muskogee." Most Oklahomans don't like to be called Okie, because that is what they were called, when they left Oklahoma because of the drought in the 30s and moved to California.
Johnny Cash, like Elvis Presley, were very religious. Elvis sang other peoples songs. Johnny Cash, sang a few songs of other artists, but he also wrote a lot of his own stuff. He had a lead guitar player, his guitar as a rhythm guitar and then he had a stand up bass player. That is a bass that is made out of would and stands about 6 ft high.
So your job is to find out the name of his daughter who is an artist in her own right. Right?

Ok sir, I think the name of his daughter who is a successful country singer is Roseanne Cash. She was born on 24 May, 1955 in Memphis, Tennesse. She was Cash's first from his marriage with Vivian Liberto.

Ah, Vicky, You are too good for me. Roseanne is a star in her own right. At one time she was trying to make it in the Rock world, but she came back to her home, CW music. Now Vicky, this will blow you away. Rodney Crowell ended up marrying Roseanne, which lasted a few years.
Cash had a home on some island he owns, and Roseanne and Rodney spent some time there. This was before they were married.
"Mr. Cash," ahh, said Rodney. "Do you care if I sleep with Roseanne?
Classic Cash, "Son, I don't know you well enough to miss you when your gone."
Another rivetting piece of information is, that when Roseanne was picking songs for an album, she came across, "Tennessee Flat Top Box," and she liked and wanted to include it on her album. Little did she know, that that song was written by none other than, Johnny Cash.
Go to iTunes and listen to it. Also, find Bonnie Raitt and listen to that Blues Lady, blow you away. Anyway, she blows me away. I could sit down in the middle of Dallas, put a hat out and start singing songs, and I'd probably get a half-eaten sandwich. Bonnie has certainly kept food on the table doing that, and so has, The Dixie Chicks.
I've got to go into town and pick up an end to a cable I need, next week, when Sassie and I perform for The Woody Guthrie Festival. Get a chance go to my Blues Blog and check it out. A real, famous Bluesman in his own Right.
You're a great blogger and a demon on the Internet. Great!!!

"... that mule, old Rivers and Me" Vicky, thank's for the cover of Walter Brennan. When it came to Western Movies, Brennan's uniquely, warbly voice, was worth his weight in gold.
Now, here is the killer for the gal who is a "demon web warrior" - Ms Vicky. It is okay if you get Bro C, to help ... that is great. In fact, if your whole class wants to blog this one, it can be a class project, because it is tough as a grizzly bear.
You would think that Walter Brennan did a cover of "Green, green grass of home." If you can find where he did cover that song, I'll buy it. Now, here is the cover hunt.
1) who wrote the poem?
2) Did Brennan cover it?
3) List all the covers you can find on it.
Now,there is a warning here. It is not so easy to jump on iTunes and count the artists. I have been listening to J.D. Sumner, who leaves out the last verse, where we discover that he is in prison. I would love to see a semi-report who J.D. Sumner is. His cover of this song, was done only a few months before his death.
So, we know, J.D. Covered. But you will have to go to google and really search to find many others who have covered it.
4)Finally, ... and this is a biggee. What does J.D. Sumner and Elvis have in common? And tell Mr. C., that I have been listening to J.D. solidly for about a month.
5) And what was J. D.'s monicker in Southern Gospel Music.
Hee, hee, hee. Mr. Cec told me no one listens to songs and albums over and over. Not true. Artists do that all the time, before they record their own version of a cover. Check with also, if you can find people who covered it, but screwed up the lyrics. (Think snopes)

Go to my Gospel Music Blog, and if you have anything new to add, do so. I haven't mentioned the "Green Green Grass of Home" or Walter Brennan. RIght now, I would have to say that Brennan didn't do a cover on the song/poem.
